Humanity starts with watching and listening to what is said, asked and told by humans.
In a time when many fundamental rights, safety and basic needs are too often abandoned for bureaucratic arbitrary reasons, we must question the meaning of this human(e) world. Is not the "recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family" the foundation of a (global) society, or human world?
Through the lens of film, we shall explore the vast complex of rights and freedoms, of being human and living as a community. A diverse range of cinematic approaches and critical perspectives invite the viewer to engage with the lived realities of individuals and communities across the world - ranging from intimately personal to historically humbling, yet always closely embedded in the lived world of human experiences.
Vienna's first international human rights film festival is a platform of cinematic art and critical discourse, a space of encounter and dialogue, and a meeting point for young innovative filmmakers, both local and international. We consider cinema not only as an artistic form wherein narrative experiences are performed or created, but also an opportunity for the audience to step out of their comfort zone and into dialogue with new challenging realities.
In the coming 11 festival days, we invite you to explore feature, documentary and short films, joined by many local and international filmmakers in Q&As and other events, further supported by an extensive accompanying programme, a festival nightline, topped off by several swirling parties.
Enjoy and be inspired by this human world 2021!
